U-M to honor legendary gymnastics coach Newt Loken

DATE: 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
EVENT: A celebration to honor the life of Newt Loken, the long-time U-M gymnastics coach who passed away over the summer at age 92.
Loken, an artistic gymnast, coached the gymnastics, trampolining and cheerleading teams. He coached the gymnastics team from 1948 to 1983, finishing with a 250-72-1 record, NCAA championships in 1963 and 1970 and 12 Big Ten championships. He also led the Michigan trampolining team to NCAA championships in 1969 and 1970.
PLACE: Jack Roth Stadium Club, located on the east side of Michigan Stadium.
MEDIA: Reporters are invited to attend the program and reception and will have the opportunity to interview Loken’s friends and former colleagues. In addition, media are invited to attend the men’s gymnastics team practice at the Newt Loken Gymnastics Training Center 2:45-4:30 p.m.
