EVENT: FAILURE:LAB

FAILURE:LAB presents an unconventional night of storytelling, where University of Michigan students, faculty and community members will recount their most memorable brush with failure.

Featured storytellers:

Jason De Leon is an assistant professor of anthropology and director of the Undocumented Migration Project, a long-term anthropological study of clandestine migration between Latin America and the United States. De Leon is a National Geographic Emerging Explorer and his book “The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail” was published by the University of California Press in 2015.

Tim McKay is the director of LSA Honors Program and an Arthur F. Thurnau professor of physics, astronomy and education. He is widely published on many topics related to astrophysics, and in recent years, has turned his attention to learning analytics: using data to understand and improve teaching and learning by exploring grading patterns and performance disparities. This has sparked the development a variety of data-driven student support tools like E2Coach through the Digital Innovation Greenhouse and the launch of the NSF-funded REBUILD project, which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and creation of intergenerational research teams in physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and math.

Arianna Carley is a U-M senior pursuing degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Entrepreneurship. She started and sold out of a Medical Device startup, has worked for a handful of other startups, and is currently working to help shape the entrepreneurship landscape at U-M.

Nadine Jawad is a U-M junior in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. She is a co-founder of 501(c)(3) Books for a Benefit and co-president of the Books for a Benefit UM-AA chapter. In addition, she serves as the senior policy adviser in the Central Student Government, tutors in the Science Learning center, serves on the Student Board for the U-M Ginsberg Center and works in the Cancer Center as a research assistant for a Head and Neck Cancer research team.

Amy Emberling is a partner in Zingerman’s Bakehouse, the artisanal bakery for Ann Arbor-based Zingerman’s Community of Businesses. She is also the treasurer of the board for Dawn Farm.
