U-M’s Montage arts portal: UMMA’s new exhibit and a familiar sound returns to campus

This month’s top stories on Montage include:

Around the block: The University of Michigan Museum of Art opens a new exhibit, “Multiple Impressions: Contemporary Chinese Woodblock Prints,” on July 16. The exhibit presents works by 41 leading printmakers, showcasing innovative techniques and styles.

Sports in America: William L. Clements Library examines leisure and sporting games in 19th-century America. “The Games We Played: Sports in Nineteenth Century America” is on display through Oct. 7.

Learning from a legend: A compelling profile of U-M’s Geri Allen, who shares the tradition of jazz with her students.

Listening to the Dow: U-M librarian transforms the stock exchange’s ups and downs into sound waves.

Silent no more: A familiar sound returned to U-M’s central campus in late June. The Charles Baird Carillon, 120 feet up in Burton Memorial Tower, is sounding again after a year of restoration.

TC bound: U-M faculty from the Screen Arts Department will once again serve as jurors at the Traverse City Film Festival, July 26-31. U-M is an educational partner in the festival. U-M students will debut the first acts of two new films, produced during winter term.

Art everywhere: The annual Ann Arbor Art Fairs will fill downtown and campus, July 20-23.

Eastern eye: Japanese Film Series begins July 29.
