ANN ARBOR—Eight University of Michigan students split $7,900 in prizes during the 66th Summer Hopwood Contest and the Marjorie Rapaport Award in Poetry. The Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards in Creative Writing are among the nation’s oldest contests for student writers.

The awards are funded by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 U-M graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother. Past winners include Arthur Miller, John Ciardi and Marge Piercy. The contests were judged by Louis Cicciarelli and Josie Kearns of the Department of English.

Winners of the Summer Hopwood Awards and the Marjorie Rapaport Award in Poetry, listed by hometown, are:

Ann Arbor

Frank Whitehouse Jr. won $800 in the Summer Hopwood Drama Screenplay category for “Dr. Chase.”

Clarkston

Joe Villella won $800 in the Hopwood Essay Contest for “Friends and Acquaintances.”

Clinton

Karl Sturk won $1,250 in the Summer Hopwood Fiction Contest for “Like a Twig Snapping Back. Stinging My Cheek” and “Siphon.”

Commerce Twp.

Victor Walbridge won $1,250 in the Hopwood Drama/Screenplay contest for “Mr. Biviins Learns the True Meaning of Christmas.” He also won $250 from the Marjorie Rapaport Award in Poetry contest.

Dearborn

Ian Singleton won $800 in the Summer Hopwood Fiction contest for “A Suburb and its City: Two Stories.”

Howell

Sarah Rubin won $350 from the Marjorie Rapaport Award for “Guell Park, Barcelona.”

Midland

Stephanie Smith won $900 in the Summer Hopwood Essay contest for “Breathing.”

Bergen, N.J.

Rebecca Mostov won $1,500 in the Summer Hopwood Poetry contest for “Not Quite Dawn.”
