URC presidents will join CEOs, U.S. officials at National Summit

DETROIT—Michigan’s University Research Corridor presidents will be among 60 nationally recognized CEOs and public officials leading discussions on transforming the U.S. economy at the National Summit June 15-17.

University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman, Wayne State University President Jay Noren and Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon will help lead a national conversation attracting CEOs of some of the nation’s largest companies, high-ranking federal officials and at least 1,200 participants as they assemble a plan for advancing the country’s agenda.

Education Innovation: The Role of Education in Fostering Innovation.

At 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, WSU President Jay Noren will begin the morning general session in a panel discussion that includes Linda Hasenfratz, CEO of Linamar Corp., and James Shelton III, U.S. Assistant Deputy Education Secretary for Innovation. Shelton is the former program director for education at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Technology Town Hall: Entrepreneurialism and Technology Innovation Drive Competitiveness.

At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, U-M President Mary Sue Coleman will be joined by Eva Chen, co-founder and CEO of Trend Micro Inc.; Anders Gustafsson, CEO of Zebra Technologies Corp.; and James Turley, chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young LLP. The moderator will be Tony Uphoff, CEO of TechWeb.

Talent Management: Attracting and Retaining Talent in a Knowledge-Based Global Economy.

At 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, MSU President Lou Anna Simon will be joined on a panel by Perrin Beatty, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and Matt Ferguson, president and CEO of CareerBuilder.com. The moderator will be Walter Shill, North America managing director of management consulting for Accenture.

The National Summit begins two weeks after General Motors Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection during an economic crisis of historic proportions. The summit is being convened by the Detroit Economic Club at the Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit, GM’s home base. A unique national conversation, it will engage a cross-sector gathering of prominent business, labor, government and academic leaders in debate and dialogue in four areas of vital importance to America’s future in a global economy: technology, energy, environment and manufacturing.
