EVENT: University of Michigan’s 64th annual Economic Outlook Conference

PLACE: Rackham Building Amphitheater, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor

BACKGROUND: U-M economist Daniil Manaenkov and colleagues will open the conference with “The U.S. Economic Outlook for 2017-2018” at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17. Richard Curtin, director of the U-M Surveys of Consumers at the Institute for Social Research, will present “The Outlook for Consumption in 2017” at 11 a.m.

The next day (Nov. 18) at 9:30 a.m., U-M economists George Fulton, Gabriel Ehrlich, Donald Grimes and Michael McWilliams will present “The 2017-2018 Outlook for the Michigan Economy.”

Other presentations include:

• “China’s Macroeconomic Outlook: Quarterly Forecast & Analysis,” by Min Gong, professor of economics and vice director of the Center for Macroeconomic Research at Xiamen University.
• “Seven Reasons to be Optimistic about Productivity,” by Daniel Sichel, professor of economics at Wellesley College.
• “The Financial Condition of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation’s Multiemployer Program,” by Damien Moore, assistant director for financial analysis at the Congressional Budget Office.
• “Two Outcomes, Neither Is Desirable,” by William Dunkelberg, professor emeritus of economics at Temple University and chief economist at the National Federation of Independent Business.
• “Forecasting Elections,” by Justin Wolfers, professor of economics and public policy at U-M.
• “Technology Trends in Economic Cross Currents – The Auto Industry Doubles Down,” by David Andrea, executive vice president of research at the Center for Automotive Research.
• “Another House Price Boom?” by David Berson, senior vice president and chief economist at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.
