ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Department of Public Safety (DPS) is cautioning the public to beware of counterfeit tickets and asking fans to be mindful of safety issues at the Ohio State football game Saturday (Nov. 22).

“We have received several reports of counterfeit tickets, with prices going up to $300,” said Capt. James Smiley. “It’s important that people realize there is a very good chance that tickets bought from scalpers are either counterfeit or stolen.”

DPS recovered counterfeit tickets at the Colorado and Notre Dame games this season, Smiley said. At the Ohio State game two years ago, more than 150 counterfeit tickets were confiscated.

People who possess counterfeit tickets will be ejected from the Stadium. Selling counterfeit tickets is against the law and offenders will be prosecuted.

DPS is also concerned that fans be mindful of safety issues while enjoying the game. “We know emotions are running high, and we want people to be aware of the potential danger if fans rush the field,” Smiley said. “The drop between the stands and the field is approximately seven feet and people could be seriously injured. The potential for a stampede effect is also a danger.” Smiley said fans who rush the field will be arrested.

Questions about counterfeit tickets or safety issues can be directed to the U-M Department of Public Safety at (313) 763-3434.
