ANN ARBOR—On Sept. 12, the University of Michigan’s A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning will host a lecture by renowned architect William McDonough, principal of William McDonough + Partners (WM+P), Charlottesville, Va.
The presentation will begin at 6 p.m., in the Chesebrough Auditorium, Chrysler Building, 2121 Bonisteel Blvd., on U-M’s North Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
McDonough is an educator, activist and environmental advocate whose work has focused on sustainable architecture and community design. In 1981, he founded WM+P in New York City. The firm moved to Charlottesville in 1994, when McDonough became dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture. He completed his term as dean in 1999, and now holds several other academic positions.
WM+P produces designs of high aesthetic and functional quality with heightened environmental sensitivity. By incorporating the needs of owners, occupants, communities, the environment and future generations, WM+P designs timeless, mindful architecture that embodies a rich and complex aesthetic heritage in contemporary terms.
“I want to create life support for people who work, instead of work-support systems for people who don’t have a life,” McDonough says.
McDonough’s clients include Nike, Gap, and Herman Miller, Inc. He is currently working with the Ford Motor Company on the revitalization of its historic Rouge Complex. The goal of this 20-year project is to lead the manufacturing world into the Next Industrial Revolution by modeling strategies for a sustaining future.
