ANN ARBOR—Fast-paced changes in Information Age jobs mean that employees need to maintain their competitive edge. The popular Digital Tool Kit workshops offered from May through July by the University of Michigan School of Information are an effective way to stay on top.

“Employers know that these are excellent courses to enroll their employees in for them to pick up new skills,” says Karen Jordan, who coordinates the Digital Tool Kit. “In addition, the workshops are valuable to people who are thinking of career advancement or updating current technical skills on their own. They tell us that they return to work with renewed enthusiasm.”

Leading practitioners and U-M faculty teach the workshops. Digital Tool Kit courses include such topics as building an effective business plan, strategic marketing, project management, information architecture, graphic design, usability methods in Web site design, HTML and XML, databases and the Web, and Perl and CGI programming.

Courses may be taken to earn continuing education units or simply for enrichment. Participants may also earn certification as a “Professional Web Site Developer” or a “Complex Web Site Developer” by choosing from predefined groups of courses.
